The list: new years resolutions

2008 was a big year, and 2009 is going to be even bigger.  To get things started off on the right foot, I put together a little "todo" list.

Here are some personal goals (non-work related) for '09:

Backpacking/Camping

I need to spend more time outdoors, and now that I'm in Northern California I have even less of an excuse than when I was in NYC.  All I need is a few friends, some camping gear, and its go time.  My sister is also a bad ass back country ranger and back packer, she's bound to have a few tips for me.

Back country skiing

I am addicted to skiing.  I have yet to meat a mountain I would not through myself off of, if it had enough snow on it, and to get the best snow you have to work for it.  I'd like to learn more about telemarking and safely hiking to find your own ski runs!

Kiva

I just got a volunteer position with Kiva's translation and content management group, so I really want to stick with this through the new year, and eventually go on to do a Kiva Fellowship.

Volunteer more

Yes, I'm already volunteering with Kiva, but I would like to find some other places to volunteer even if its once a month in a soup kitchen, etc.

Rugby

I miss organized sports.  I stopped playing soccer after some major injurie in highschool, and lacrosse require too much equipment.  That leaves rugby.  My buddy plays on the Berkley team, and I've been out to practice with them once already, but now I'm going to need to get in shape before I can really contribute.

Write more/Blog more

My dorky tech blog has been pretty half-ass this year, and I've been trailing off lately on this blog.  I need to keep on top of my writing as way to develop ideas and better communicate those ideas.  Its just a matter of taking the time to do it....

Eat Healthy (er)

I already cook alot, and I mostly cook healthy food (turkey sausage, lots of spinach, fish, etc).  But I want to learn more about the underlying nutrition and cooking techniques for keeping everything lean.

Farmers market once / week

Part of eating healthy is getting tasty fresh produce!  I've been going to the Noe Valley farmers market on the weekends, and its always been worth the trip.  This year I want to get in the habit of doing at least one farmers market trip per week.

French/Spanish reading and movies

Yes, I used to speak french and spanish, but boy do they suffer when I don't use them.   Luckily I've found a few crazy french speaker in SF, so I can speak a bit, but really the key is reading and listening.  TV shows, films, comic books, novels are all great ways to practice, so I just need to find where to get these things.

Better photo collection, old photo scanning

I love going back over old photos and reminiscing.  I don't quite treat my memory with the respect it deserves, so I have to rely more on pictures to do the remembering for me.  Right now my pics are scattered across Flickr, Smugmug, and Facebook as well as both on my Mac an dPC at home.  Picasa, iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, Aperture, sync applications?  Why is this so tough, and is there an easy way to make this happen?  Sounds like a nice project for the new year, which I've already kick started by scanning a big batch of film photos back in Houston.

Help at least one friend achieve a new years resolution

These long term goals are often tough, and its always nice to have an extra hand or maybe even a little shove.

Relax/Yoga

I used to go to Yoga for the People on St. Marks in NYC, so I need to find a place in SF.  A little relaxation goes a long way, and its much easier said than done.

Attend a meetup or other random event

In NYC I got dragged to random events all the time, but now that I'm new to SF I've got to make a bit of an effort to get out there.

Participate more in SF tech community

What SF has that no other city has, is a killer tech community.  There are some ridiculously smart people out here, and I need to pick their brains and get involved!
